USAID Reaches Out

Water is one of the most essential elements required for human life. Though all living organisms require water, humans require clean and safe water. Since 2.4 billion all over the world are still struggling for access to clean water. This is why water supply, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) has been the main focus of USAID. The aim here is to provide clean and safe water to the people.

How Did They Make A Difference

Since the fiscal year 2014, this organization has started striving towards clean water and has successfully improved the clean water access for about 3.4 billion people. These are people from 25 different countries, which were prioritized based on the level of need.

For sanitation purpose, overall a total of 6000 latrines were constructed. This enabled people to defecate in a safe manner and prevented diseases spreading through feces. Apart from water contamination, lack of sanitation is a major problem when it comes to the spreading of diseases. This is because the body discards the waste, which when not cleaned, will infect the people exposed to it.

Different Countries Different Problems

Many developing countries are still struggling to keep their areas clean away from feces, despite having proper sanitation facilities. This is due to the mentality of its people. While many realize the importance and need for sanitation, and understand the consequences of lack of hygiene, there are a few who are still oblivious to the consequences. As a result, these people do not treat sanitation and proper discarding procedures as important.

Only the developed countries have strict laws in place, to punish those who do not treat sanitation as an important factor in the well being of people. In developed cointries, one cannot defecate in the open.
